Volunteer opportunity description

Bullying is an epidemic that schools across the country are struggling to combat. The Oklahoma Center for Community and Justice (OCCJ) strives to train Oklahoman students to combat bullying with its program, Middletown. OCCJ staff and volunteers facilitate the program in middle schools throughout the Tulsa area.

This 3-hour interactive workshop provides students with the tools and skills to reduce incidents of stereotyping and bullying in their schools. Students will learn through activities that bring them together in a safe and inclusive environment. Students will also learn about the effects of bullying on their peers as well as themselves. The activities in Middletown focus on the power of words, body-image, race, gender, relationships, and socio-economic status.

We provide an individually scheduled volunteer training, approximately one hour in length. It's best practice if the volunteer can shadow an experienced facilitator as well. We provide the curriculum and all necessary materials (including a PowerPoint presentation), and the teacher and/or other school faculty provides behavior management and technological support.

Volunteers will commit to facilitating three, hour-long weekly sessions in the classroom. Sometimes the workshop is broken down into different time frames, but the total time commitment is always three hours.

Volunteers should enjoy working with young adolescents (ages 11-15) and feel comfortable talking with them about challenging issues around bullying, body image, and bias.

Volunteers must be able to reliably arrive at the school on time. They must pass a background check, paid for by OCCJ. Conversational level English speaking and basic English literacy skills are necessary.
